The Legacy of James Oviatt
James Oviatt embarked on his retail journey in 1911 by partnering with Frank Alexander to establish what would later become Los Angeles' foremost high-end clothing store: Alexander and Oviatt.
Oviatt's extensive travels enabled him to procure premium fabrics and keep up with global fashion trends, thus elevating the haberdashery's reputation for its superior quality and diverse product selection.
During one of his voyages, Oviatt found inspiration in René Lalique’s 1925 Parisian Exhibition. This inspiration fueled his vision for an art deco building and penthouse, which he affectionately termed "The Castle of Our Dreams" where, he and his wife resided until his passing in 1975.
This architectural marvel eventually became known as Downtown LA's pioneering Art Deco skyscraper, now revered as the Oviatt Building, a significant historical landmark and designated Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument.
